June Chapter Meeting and Urban Planning for Smart Cities Presentation

Please join your chapter leadership for a check in and presentation from our very own Chapter Secretary, Amber Watts, on Tuesday June 18th at 5:30pm PST on Zoom! Please find the meeting link below, and note, there is a password.

Urban Planning for Smart Cities - Presented by Amber Watts

Amber Watts is a System Engineer at UNCIO Engineering, with over 7 years of experience in systems engineering, primarily in requirements and configuration management, systems integration, and safety certification. Based in Los Angeles, she supports large rail infrastructure construction projects in the LA metro area, Central Valley, and San Francisco Bay Area. She works with systems and civil engineers and architects to manage project scope and requirements. Amber has varying levels of experience in asset and procurement management, change and risk management, and database management. Amber holds a BS in Urban and Regional Studies & Planning and a Community Engagement Certification both from Virginia Commonwealth University.

Amber, in collaboration with Jim Hubbell for the INCOSE Smart Cities Initiative, has developed a presentation to introduce the merging of urban planning and systems engineering practices in the development of Smart Cities. The Smart Cities Initiative is currently using urban planning and model-based systems engineering (MBSE) strategies to perform analyses and develop solutions for various interest groups and municipal organizations as a way to assist future projects, programs, and initiatives around the world. During the presentation, Amber will discuss how urban planners approach municipal planning, explain terminology, and provide a framework for how systems engineers can best collaborate with urban planners to support urban improvements. This discussion will use a case study from a planned community in Seattle, where urban planning practices and active participation from city and neighborhood residents have created a vibrant and productive development with affordable housing.

June Workshop: Document-Based Systems Engineering vs. Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE): An introduction to the benefits of MBSE

Join this in-person, hands-on workshop to learn about the advantages of model-based systems engineering (MBSE) over document-based systems engineering. At the end of the workshop, you’ll have the chance to use a system modeling tool to see the advantages first hand. This workshop is geared toward those looking for a first exposure to MBSE and system modeling. This event has limited capacity and has a fee to hold a spot which will be refunded upon verification of event attendance. Please fill out the RSVP form below and send the hold fee as instructed to hold your spot.

UPDATE (6/6/23) - Registration Closed

Date: Thursday, June 8th, 2023

Time: 1:00pm-4:00pm

Address: Dassault Systemes, 3979 Freedom Cir #750, Santa Clara, CA 95054

Hold Fee: $20 for INCOSE members, $30 for non-members

Synopsis: As products become increasingly complex, companies need new processes to manage such complexity. Model-based systems engineering (MBSE) provides a process to ensure products are designed right the first time by making sure stakeholder needs are clearly understood and satisfied via visual artefacts.

***Attendees who would like to participate in the system modeling portion, must bring their own laptop and install the required software prior to the workshop***

Agenda:

1:00-2:30 pm: Document-based systems engineering vs. Model-based systems engineering presentation

2:30-4:00 pm: Hands-on system modeling tutorial

4:00 pm: Networking happy hour with food and drinks

Finding the Titanic – An Engineer’s Perspective

Presenter Biography:

Stewart Harris

Recently retired from the University of California, Berkeley, Stewart Harris worked at the Space Sciences Laboratory (SSL) for over 20 years, building instruments and satellites for space research.  Having built a career specializing in remote, electronic imaging, Stu, as he is known, managed a variety of projects at SSL, most of which featured a variety of high performance imaging systems.  Prior to moving to Berkeley, Stu worked in the field of underwater instrumentation, spending several years at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.  While at Woods Hole, working for Robert Ballard, Stu led the project to build the Argo underwater search system.  Argo was used successfully, in 1985, to discover the Titanic wreck site in the North Atlantic.  Stu received the Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from Virginia Tech, and a Master’s degree from Stanford University.  He currently resides in Walnut Creek, CA, with his wife, Marian, a print artist.
